The Airfield Site
The Airfield Land is approximately 44 acres in size and was acquired by Lec Refrigeration and the grass runway opened after the war in the 1940's. The airfield had runway lights installed at some point and in 1984 a hard surfaced tarmac airstrip was created by Charles Purley and his son, David. There was a hanger built at the same time but this was subsequently damaged by fire in 2001 and taken down.
The land is maintained by SDLL for its current use, which is open space. However, the public should be aware that this is private land, and are urged to keep to the public footpath which runs along the western boundary of the land. For their own safety, the public should not stray into other parts of the Airfield Land.
The Local Plan shows a section of the proposed North/South Relief Road located on the site. The future of the Airfield Site will be determined in consultation with Arun District Council and the local community as part of the emerging Local Development Framework process.
